One hundred years ago, on 25 January 1921, the play R.U.R. premièred, introducing the word 'robot' to the world. Although the play does not feature robots as we know them today, many dissertations on robots refer to the play for its name. Today, the term and what it stands for are indispensable in our society and industry. Robots are also a frequent presence at Sirris and for the occasion we put them in the spotlight.

Launched in 2016, the Interreg Smart Tooling project in which Sirris was also involved, was recently finalised. The innovations which were developed to significantly increase the efficiency and safety of maintenance, inspection and industrial cleaning in the process industry were shown and demonstrated at the closing event in November 2020.

On January 12, 2021, the COBOFIN project was officially launched. This is about the automation of sanding and deburring of small batches using a cobot. The project was explained to the supervisory group during a digital meeting and zoomed in on both substantive and practical matters. There were more than 20 participants at this meeting!

Customers want products with an impeccable finish. Many steel or plastic products have irregularities caused during the production process which have to be eliminated by sanding, deburring or both. These operations are carried out manually, which has a lot of disadvantages. Automation is a possible solution, which Sirris (with the support of VLAIO) will now investigate in the COBOFIN project.

The ColRobFood project is aimed at flexible automation to strengthen the competitiveness of food companies. This is done through the development and validation of a number of proof-of-concept demonstrators, events and practical guidelines for the accelerated introduction of cobots in the food industry. The project ends at the end of November. An overview of what has been achieved in two years’ time.

On the assembly line in the Sirris lab in Kortrijk, One Two, a company known for their Action Trackers, recently conducted a few experiments. The purpose of the experiments was to investigate whether the Action Tracker could be used to register or start certain actions on a production line of, for example, a manufacturing company.

As optimisation of internal production logistics is crucial to become more agile, companies are still struggling with the fact that integrating a task-driven autonomous mobile robot solution is very complex, the loading and unloading is still too slow and it is difficult to combine systems of different brands. An newly developed demonstrator will show a solution for these challenges, that can be reproduced in your own facility.
