Laser engraving is a fast and efficient way to permanently mark all kinds of materials. Laser engraving comes in all shapes and sizes. Colours are also possible. Various techniques and technologies are available for this.

The use of femtosecond lasers for laser marking, instead of the classical nano- and picosecond lasers can prevent corrosion. Unknown is unloved and therefore Sirris gives you the opportunity not only to get acquainted with this new laser technology, but also to compare it with the technology you have in-house.

In cooperation with the Swiss CERN, Sirris is evaluating the creation of cooling channels in silicon wafers by means of femtosecond (fs) laser ablation.

The application of nanotextures with ultra-short pulsed lasers remains interesting for many applications and LIPSS (laser induced periodic surface structures) is the most widely used technique. A newly developed module makes it possible to achieve more precise, higher-quality structures, even on large surfaces. This is particularly interesting for anti-icing surfaces, as applied in aviation or wind energy.

The build-up of ice on the wings and propellers of an aircraft, drone or wind turbine results in reduced lift or increased consumption. Ice formation may be actively and passively combated. It’s recently been shown that making the surface superhydrophobic in certain weather conditions can counteract this ice formation.

Thanks to the ongoing evolution of laser technology, the application possibilities are steadily expanding. This is no different with femtosecond laser technology.

Ultra-black is an interesting colour for many sectors, for aerospace, first of all, and for several reasons. It can be achieved with black coatings, however, there are some limitations to this methodology. That is why Sirris, together with ESA, is investigating laser texturing to achieve ultra-black, without any additional disadvantages or limitations.
