Sirris presents a composite wishbone with integrated sensors


The next edition of the Materials trade fair, which takes place on 31 May and 1 June in Veldhoven, has a practice-oriented set-up themed around four pillars: materials, surface techniques, joining techniques and analysis techniques. Keynote speeches and live demos will be presented in the different Experience Areas to inspire visitors. Markus Kaufmann from the SLC-Lab will also hold a speech. 

Program Manager Composites & SLC-Lab manager Markus Kaufmann will present 'Net-shape production of a composite wishbone’ at Materials. This is a demonstrator that recently gained international attention: a wishbone for the suspension of a Volkswagen Golf, developed by SLC-Lab together with two German partner universities in the context of a European project (DeMaCo). The component illustrates that the resin transfer moulding technology is perfectly suited for complex designs. Although the shape is quite complex with two integrated inserts, it does not require post-treatment and even allows for the integration of optical fibre sensors for structural health monitoring.

The wishbone was manufactured at the SLC-Lab where a foam core was covered with carbon and injected with epoxy.

During the seminar we will discuss the complexity of matrix design for RTM, the integration of inserts in complex preforms, and measuring the tensions by means of fibre sensors and the quality analysis with a CT scanner.  

Fair floor

With more than 85 participants and about 40 knowledge sessions the trade fair Materials wants to make a connection between science and practical applications. Each of the four pillars on which the fair is built shall be assigned its own area at the trade fair location. Within a certain zone the exhibitors will be positioned around collective Experience Areas where they will give live demos or where visitors can set to work. Every area also has a separate seminar room. 

Sirris will be present at the trade fair (stand number 70) with different types of expertise.
