Even before the recent developments started to affect our energy supply, the Belgian government had decided to shift up a gear in the production of renewable energy. To this end, they are primarily considering to look at offshore wind in the Belgian North Sea. Technological innovation will play a major role and our response is the second edition of the Wind Energy Technology Summit in June.

A series of online lectures organised by the Belgian Embassy in Seoul, South Korea, on 10 May will look into offshore wind and solar energy, and how it is reshaping the renewable energy scene. The panel discussion "Hot and Windy: on the future of our energy" will take place in this context, with the participation of Sirris.

Not only chocolates and beers, but also our expertise and experience in offshore wind energy has now become a Belgian export product of worldwide fame. This will be demonstrated once again at the International Offshore Wind Partnering Forum (IPF), North America's leading conference on offshore wind energy, which will take place from 26 to 28 April. Sirris, as coordinator of OWI-Lab, is proud to be giving a keynote speech at this industry meeting.

Ice formation causes many safety issues and other problems in our day-to-day work and the operation of machines. At Sirris, various experts have sought to improve our knowledge of atmospheric ice formation and to find ways to limit it. These activities form part of the COOCK Fighting Icing and NewSkin projects.

On 17 February, six companies received the title of Factory of the Future on the occasion of the eighth edition of the Factory of the Future Awards. It is the initiator’s intention for the award to identify the most future-oriented manufacturing companies in Belgium. One of this year’s winners is ZF Wind Power, a wind turbine gearbox producer from Lommel.

Understanding behaviour and performance of drones in adverse weather and harsh flight environments is a prerequisite to developing meaningful test protocols for the validation and certification of these flying systems. An exploratory work investigates the development of a method for characterising the performance of propellers in laboratory icing conditions, as considered the most critical. This research was enabled by the use of a climatic chamber featuring an array of water nozzles that makes it possible to generate icing condition, in combination with a windshaper.

From 2 to 4 November Bruges will be hosting the 2022 EAWE PhD, expecting to welcome over 100 PhD researchers from all over Europe, interested in key-talks and presentations on wind energy. The organisation lies with the PhairywinD PhD group, nine Belgian early-stage researchers focusing on offshore wind energy. Sirris is partner in the PhairywinD consortium.

The passion for sustainability has conquered our society at high speed. Strong carbon-neutral legislative objectives are set with the intention of reducing the environmental impact for all industries. This is how we are aiming to achieve a 30% reduction in the materials footprint by 2030 in Flanders, and a fully circular economy by 2050. These plans are indeed ambitious and companies are working hard. Can composite materials contribute to accomplish these goals?

As the weather gets colder, many systems, including aeroplanes and wind turbines, will again have to contend with the effects of lower temperatures, winter precipitation and ice formation. We recently published that temperatures and icing are among the ten most common problems leading to wind turbine failure. Recent developments could change this, saving costs and effort in multiple sectors.

The analysis of the data of some 7,000 wind turbines has revealed the main problems causing downtime and, therefore, lost potential energy production when the wind turbine is out. Many of these problems can be solved or prevented.
