How you can reduce tool wear

The emergence of data techniques, advanced sensors and vision systems, when combined with production knowledge, allows the condition of machining tools to be more effectively monitored so they can be changed in good time. In our masterclass on tool wear on 3 February, we will look at tool wear in a broad sense from a practical perspective.

In machining processes, the condition and quality of the tool is one of the most important factors in the process. Changing tools at the right time is crucial. Traditionally, companies do this manually: changing tools at fixed intervals, regardless of the tool condition, or by visual and subjective interpretation. This often leads to a process that is inefficient and difficult to automate.

The emergence of data techniques, advanced sensors and vision systems, in combination with production knowledge, allows better control of the tool’s condition. In our masterclass on tool wear, we look at the possibilities, see how research is evolving and, by means of hands-on demonstrations, show how by using certain measurements we can predict which conditions will lead to less wear. This, in turn, will lead to a better finished quality of the products. 

The following themes will be discussed during the masterclass:

  • Background- and basic knowledge of tool wear and actions
  • Simulation of the production environment to limit wear and practical implementation of these measurements
  • Using sensors to monitor wear
  • Using vision and artificial intelligence to determine wear autonomously
  • Solutions to reduce wear, such as new cooling methods or damped machine tools

As a participant, you will, at the end of this day, have an overview of the state of research as well as the sensors, software and techniques needed to implement predictive algorithms and a good idea of both the strength of this approach and of how to put it into practice.

This masterclass is intended for companies that are active in machining operations, whether for small or large production series.

Important: Since we want to give some practical demos, this masterclass will physically take place in Diepenbeek. Due to the corona situation, it was therefore decided to move this session to February 2022.
